BSNL’s Indigenous 4G Network Sees Rising Usage
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is now handling around 6 petabytes (PB) of data every day on its indigenous 4G network, highlighting the growing usage of the state-run telecom operator’s upgraded mobile infrastructure.
The figure was shared by Rajkumar Upadhyay, Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), as BSNL continues to expand its homegrown 4G network and attract more users.
1.75 Lakh 4G Base Stations Deployed
According to Upadhyay, BSNL has deployed around 1.75 lakh 4G base stations across 1 lakh sites. These installations are currently serving millions of 4G subscribers across the country.
BSNL has around 9.3 crore subscribers nationwidealthough the current 4G network is serving a smaller subset of that base. The growing data traffic suggests that customers are increasingly using BSNL’s 4G infrastructure for mobile internet services.
The development is particularly significant because the network is based on technology developed in India rather than relying entirely on foreign telecom equipment.
TCS, Tejas Networks and C-DOT Behind the Network
The indigenous 4G rollout has been implemented through a TCS-led consortiumwith Tejas Networks providing the radio access network (RAN) and C-DOT supplying the core technology.
The network has now been deployed across approximately 1 lakh new sites, marking one of India’s largest indigenous telecom technology deployments.
The government-backed approach is also intended to create a domestic ecosystem for telecom equipment and technology.
HD Voice Coming Nationwide
C-DOT has already deployed an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for BSNL’s 4G network, enabling high-definition voice calling.
IMS-based HD voice services are currently available in seven telecom circles and are expected to be expanded nationwide in the coming months.
The technology is also being developed with future 5G compatibility in mind, meaning software updates could allow the system to support BSNL’s 5G network when it is launched.
C-DOT Tests Indigenous 5G Technology
The next step is already underway. C-DOT’s indigenous 5G RAN, developed with startup WiSig and contract manufacturer VVDN Technologies, is undergoing live testing on BSNL’s network in Ambala.
The trials are being conducted using BSNL’s spectrum in the 3.6–3.7 GHz band. C-DOT expects the current testing phase to conclude within a month.
BSNL already has a 5G non-standalone core deployed across its circles, while development of a standalone 5G core continues.
From Indian Network to Export Opportunity
C-DOT has also transferred its 4G technology to Indian companies including ITI, Bharat Electronics Limited and Electronics Corporation of India Limited for potential manufacturing.
The larger ambition goes beyond BSNL. C-DOT says its telecom technologies could eventually be offered to other operators and international markets.
