Caprese Burgers

Caprese Burgers

Inspired by the classic Italian Caprese salad, these juicy burgers combine ground beef with fragrant basil pesto and finish with fresh tomato and creamy mozzarella. It’s a simple but flavorful twist on a traditional burger that’s perfect for a summer lunch, weekend dinner or casual gathering.

Ingredients

For the Burgers

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 3 tbsp basil pesto
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Toppings

  • 2 large ripe tomatoes, sliced
  • 125–150 g fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp basil pesto
  • Balsamic glaze, optional
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

How to Make Caprese Burgers

1. Prepare the Beef

Place the ground beef in a bowl and gently mix in the basil pesto, salt and black pepper.

Don’t overwork the meat, as this can make the burgers dense.

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty slightly wider than the burger buns.

2. Cook the Burgers

Heat a grill pan, skillet or outdoor grill over medium-high heat.

Lightly oil the cooking surface and place the patties on it.

Cook for approximately 4–5 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness. For food safety, ground beef should reach 71°C (160°F) internally.

3. Add the Mozzarella

During the final minute of cooking, place a slice of fresh mozzarella on each burger.

Cover the pan or grill briefly to help the cheese soften and melt slightly.

4. Toast the Buns

Cut the buns in half and lightly toast the cut sides on the grill or in a skillet until golden.

5. Assemble

Spread a little pesto over the toasted buns.

Place the hot burger on the bottom half and top with:

  1. Fresh mozzarella
  2. Tomato slices
  3. Fresh basil leaves
  4. A little more pesto
  5. A drizzle of balsamic glaze, if desired

Season the tomato lightly with salt and pepper before placing the top bun over everything.

Tips for the Best Caprese Burgers

Choose good tomatoes: Since tomato is one of the main flavours, use ripe, juicy tomatoes.

Don’t overmix the beef: Gentle handling keeps the patties tender.

Use fresh mozzarella: It provides the soft, creamy texture that makes these burgers different from ordinary cheeseburgers.

Toast the buns: A lightly crisped bun provides a pleasant contrast to the juicy burger and fresh toppings.

Go easy on the pesto: Pesto is already bold and salty, so a little goes a long way.

The Bottom Line

These Caprese Burgers bring together everything that makes the Italian salad so appealing—tomato, mozzarella and basil—and combine it with a juicy pesto-seasoned beef patty.

The result is a burger that’s rich, fresh, savoury and packed with Mediterranean-inspired flavour.
