Central government increased the fees for making passport, new rule will be implemented from July 1

New Delhi, June 25. The Government of India has increased the fees for making a passport. This new fee has been fixed by making changes in the Passport Rules, 1980 and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also issued an official notification in this regard. This new fee will come into effect from July 1, 2026.

Applicants will now have to pay Rs 2,500 for a normal passport

According to the new notification of the Central Government, now the applicants will have to pay an additional amount of Rs 1,000. That means the fee for a 36 page normal passport has increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500. The fee for Tatkal service, which was earlier Rs 3,500, has now been reduced to Rs 5,000.

Passport fees fixed according to different categories

The government has made this change under Section 24 of the Passport Act, 1967. Under this new system, application fees for different categories of passports have been fixed. Also, it has been clarified in the new rules that if minors aged between 15 to 18 years apply in the adult category, they will also have to pay the same fees which is applicable to adults.

The government says that this amendment will help in improving passport services and making the process more systematic. However, due to increase in fees, common people will have to spend more money than before to get a passport made. If someone is planning or planning to apply for a passport, he or she will have to pay as per the new rate after July 1, 2026.

New fees for making passport

  • 36 page ordinary passport – increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500.
  • 36 page Tatkal Passport – increased from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000.
  • 60 page ordinary passport – increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500.
  • 60 page Tatkal Passport – increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000.

Apart from this, those who travel frequently and want a 60-page passport booklet will have to pay Rs 3,500 for general category and Rs 6,000 for instant processing.

10% discount for senior citizens and children

However, the government has made a provision of 10 percent discount on new applications for children up to eight years of age and senior citizens above 60 years of age.
