Chief Minister Vijay has made another historic announcement regarding the politics and public welfare schemes of Tamil Nadu. He has officially launched the much talked about 'Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme' for the newborn babies of the state. To implement this ambitious plan, the government has given tender and work order to two famous jewelers of the country to produce rings on a large scale.
More than 1.28 lakh rings will be made for new born children from June to September
Under this scheme, the Tamil Nadu government will provide 1 gram gold ring as a gift to new born babies born in government hospitals. In the initial phase, these gold rings will be distributed to 1,28,499 eligible children born during the four months from June to September.
According to PTI report, Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) has issued orders for the supply of these rings to the country's reputed jewelery retail companies – Joy Alukkas and Kalyan Jewellers. The Tamil Nadu government has decided to formally launch this scheme on 15 September 2026. The date of 15th September is also special because on this day former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu C.N. Annadurai's birth anniversary. It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Vijay had announced this welfare scheme in his public meetings just before the assembly elections held in April this year.
How much will the gold ring weigh and how was the tender received?
According to the final roadmap of the Tamil Nadu government, a total of 4,41,667 gold rings will be purchased during the entire scheme. Each ring will weigh exactly 1 gram (22-karat gold).
An e-tender was issued by TNMSC on July 14 for the supply of rings, in which a total of 11 leading jewelery companies of the country participated. During the tender process, Joy Alukkas surprised everyone by quoting the lowest price of Rs 0.01 (1 paisa) inclusive of all additional charges including making charges, insurance, transportation and BIS stamping over and above the current market price of 1 gram of gold.
When other companies were asked to match the lowest bid (L1) under Tamil Nadu transparent tender rules, Kalyan Jewelers also agreed to work at the same minimum rate. After this the government divided the work order between the two companies in the ratio of 70:30.
Why did Tamil Nadu government start this 'Gold Ring Scheme'?
To avail the benefits of this scheme, a very mandatory rule has also been fixed. The benefit of the scheme will be available only to those children who were born in government hospitals of the state.
According to the state government, the main objective of starting the 'Gold Ring Scheme' is to strengthen the trust and confidence of the general public in government health services and government hospitals. Under this thinking, this unique gift will be given by the government to every newborn baby born in government hospitals of the state from June 22, 2026.
