China Medog Dam: China’s largest Medog Hydropower Dam became a big ‘time bomb’ for the world.

Dangerous China Medog Dam: The world’s largest Medog Hydropower Project being built in the Tibet region of China is embroiled in a big and dangerous controversy. A new study by Chinese government geologists has raised very serious questions on the safety of this huge dam. According to research, this massive project is being built just above an active Paijen fault line. This fault line can become the main cause of major earthquakes and huge destruction in future.

This big dam is located only 50 kilometers from the border of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The total power generation capacity of this huge hydropower project is said to be up to 60 thousand MW. Chinese scientists have given a stern warning to their own government, calling it a dangerous geological time bomb. After this revelation, concerns regarding this big project have increased in many neighboring countries including India.

137 billion dollar project

This huge Medog Hydropower Station is being built on Yarlung Tsangpo i.e. Brahmaputra River in Tibet. The estimated cost of this entire massive project has been estimated at 1 trillion yuan i.e. approximately 137 billion dollars. China approved it in December 2024 and its construction was fully started in July 2025. The government has set a huge target to make this huge dam fully operational by the year 2033.

active fault line danger

According to the latest report of Chinese scientists, this Pigeon Fault has been very active since the Pleistocene era. Old lake sediments clearly show that this geological fault was fully active until 9,500 years ago. In the year 2017, a very heavy earthquake of 6.9 magnitude occurred in the northern part of this fault in Tibet. Scientists say that due to movement of this fault, the safety of the entire dam can be in deep danger.

The capacity of the land weakened

Due to frequent earthquakes and continuous movement of faults, the land of this entire area has become very weak. Geologists have clearly stated that the surrounding rocks have already broken and their strength has reduced. There is no capacity here to bear the heavy weight of such a huge 60 thousand MW dam and reservoir. Therefore, there is a huge and serious risk of collapse of this entire project in the event of an earthquake.

Fear of landslides and devastation

Scientists have warned that the land around the reservoir of this big dam is very loose. When this huge reservoir fills with water, the risk of fault activity and landslides due to earthquakes will increase significantly. Due to its huge pressure, large rocks can move and the risk of sudden breach of the dam will be the highest. Therefore, during its construction, very strict safety measures will have to be taken to strengthen the slopes.

India and Bangladesh’s eyes

India and Bangladesh are keeping a very close eye on this entire sensitive matter and the flow of the river. According to water experts, China cannot completely stop all the water of this river. The real question is what will happen if the dam breaks in this highly sensitive earthquake prone area of the Himalayas. If this dangerous time bomb explodes, it could cause severe floods in downstream countries.
