The law is meant to impose huge tariffs on countries that still import energy from Russia. At least 500 percent tariff has been proposed in the preliminary draft of the bill. India has long been a major buyer of Russian oil. As a result, if the new law is passed, there is ample reason for India’s headache to increase.
Two senators each from both the Republican and Democrat parties have proposed this bill. With the approval of the Trump administration, the bill will be presented this time. According to the Sanctioning Russia Act 2025, the countries that buy oil, gas, uranium, petroleum products from Russia will have to impose tariffs. That duty can be up to 500 percent. However, in the interests of US national security, the President of the United States can grant a maximum 180-day exemption from the ban on buying Russian products, as stated in the bill.
Note that one of these four senators behind the bill is Lindsay Graham. Last year he directly threatened India. X wrote on the handle, ‘If you continue to fuel the India and Sino-Putin war machine, you have no one to blame but yourselves.’ Now India may be in trouble with the bill presented by him. After the start of the Russia-Ukraine war from 2022, several Western countries stopped importing Russian oil. However, many countries such as Germany continue to import Russian gas. At that time, India started buying Russian oil at a low price. Russian oil imports continue to increase. America did not take this matter well from the beginning. But New Delhi’s position was clear, keeping in mind the national interest, oil would be procured from wherever it is profitable to import oil.
In August last year, Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods for the ‘crime’ of buying Russian oil. Then he made it clear that Russia is carrying out killings in Ukraine with the money from the sale of oil. That is why countries importing Russian oil will be ‘punished’. Trump ‘instructed’ India to stop buying Russian oil. But the American war with Iran started from February. The oil market crashed. At that time America also gave ‘permission’ to India to buy Russian oil. That ‘permission’ has now expired.
