He says that such statements can affect social harmony. The complaint alleges misrepresentation of Ramayana and mocking Hindu beliefs. The controversy began in January, when Prakash Raj participated in the Kerala Literature Festival. There he mentioned a children’s theater performance.
In this performance Ramayana was depicted from a modern and satirical perspective. Characters like Ram, Lakshman, Ravana and Shurpanakha were presented in a new form. Modern elements like fruits, payments and GST were added to the story. Prakash Raj told that the children portrayed Ram and Lakshman as people who came from North India. On Shurpanakha’s objection to eating fruits from Ravana’s garden, Ravana said that he was hungry. Later Ram talks about giving the money, but the price is said to be very high, which also includes GST. It was jokingly said that when there is no money, one is asked to grow a tree by sowing seeds.
Videos of this incident spread rapidly on social media. Many people called it an insult to Ramayana. Some users said that this is promoting North-South divide and insulting Lord Ram. Prakash Raj later clarified that he did not insult Ramayana, but described a children’s theater workshop. He said that his statement has been taken out of context.
The actor also said that he respects all religions and beliefs. Legal process has started in this matter. A complaint has also been registered in the cyber cell of Delhi Police. Defamation notices worth Rs 100 crore have also been sent at some places. This incident is once again sparking a debate about the limits of public discussion and satire on a holy scripture like Ramayana. Many people believe that respect for religious sentiments is necessary, while some link it to freedom of expression.
