There will be changes in the new scheme from MNREGA like this

  • The draft rules mention the process for transition from MGNREGA to VB-GRAM. This new Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme will replace the existing MNREGA.
  • Ongoing work will not be stopped during the changeover. Old liabilities will be paid and necessary records will be transferred to the new system. Verified job cards will also remain valid.
  • Until the state issues a notification to implement the new scheme, the existing rights of the workers will also remain intact. This information has been given by officials of the Ministry of Rural Development.

Work guarantee and cost sharing

Guarantee of work for 125 days in a year

The government has said that under the new law, every rural family will be guaranteed 125 days of work in a year, which was earlier 100 days. This will provide more work to the families living in villages and strengthen their economic security. The expenses of this scheme will be jointly borne by the central and state governments. In normal states, the distribution of expenditure will be 60 percent between the Center and 40 percent of the state.

Provision to bear the expenses of the central government

In the northeastern states, hill states and union territories like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, the central government will bear 90 percent of the expenditure. According to Section 6, State Governments will be able to control the work awarded under the scheme for a maximum of 60 days in a year during peak farming periods, such as sowing and harvesting.
