Washington, August 14 (IANS). India's share in the global space market may increase five times in the next seven years. This will happen because policy reforms and closer relations with the US will accelerate the growth of India's private space industry. This information has been given by the US Commerce Department.
At present India's share in the global space market is less than 2 percent. But the department's International Trade Administration estimated in its August 'Aerospace and Defense Exporter Alert' that the share would reach 10 percent in the next five to seven years.
The department said, “India's private sector space ecosystem is rapidly developing and the steps taken by the Government of India towards privatization will also create opportunities for international space companies.” In this alert, India's space sector has been described as “Market of the Month”. In this, emphasis was laid on investment opportunities for American companies in satellite systems, advanced spaceflight, connectivity, manufacturing and related technologies.
America and India have been cooperating in the field of space since India's first rocket launch in 1963. That rocket was 'Nike-Apache' made in America. Since then, the partnership has grown through scientific exchanges, joint working groups and joint projects. NASA and American companies have also supplied technology and parts to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
The department said that India's new space startups are trying to increase their operations and manufacturing presence in America. In February 2026, the Business Council for International Understanding led the visit of an International Trade Administration-certified US commercial space mission to Bengaluru. It has been declared successful in the alert.
“Space is an important area of cooperation between the United States and India that benefits both countries through trade, technology, and joint policy efforts,” the department said. Commercial relations are being developed through the 'US-India Civil Space Joint Working Group'. According to the alert, the 'Trust' initiative launched in 2025 has also strengthened cooperation.
The 'Commercial Space Sub-Working Group' is jointly led by the US Department of Commerce and India's Department of Space. Its objective is to remove the obstacles faced by the companies of both the countries. Its functions include market access, procurement, foreign direct investment (FDI) and export controls. A joint statement by the leaders of the two countries in February 2025 also called for stronger cooperation in space exploration, security and professional exchanges.
The Commerce Department urged US companies interested in entering India to attend the 'Bengaluru Space Expo' to be held from September 7 to 9. The event will bring together industry leaders and policy-makers and provide an opportunity to Indian and international companies to showcase their capabilities.
