Switching on or off the electricity in the house is a part of our everyday life. Generally, it may be normal to hear a slight sound or a slight electrical arc forming inside when you press the switch. But if every time you press the switch, a strong spark is seen, a crackling sound is heard, or a burning smell starts appearing, then considering it as a minor problem can be dangerous.
Such symptoms may indicate a malfunction in the electrical wiring, switches, or circuits. Therefore, it is important to understand what is the difference between a normal electrical arc and dangerous sparking.
When can light sparking become normal?
When a switch connects or disconnects a circuit, a very small electrical arc may form between its contacts. Usually it is so minor that it is not visible to the eyes.
In some cases a slight clicking sound may be heard inside the switch. This effect may be greater for older types of bulbs, high-powered fixtures, or switches that control long circuits. However, a clearly visible bright spark from outside should not be considered normal.
Be careful if you see a bright spark
If a bright light-like spark suddenly appears while pressing the switch or a continuous clicking sound comes from the switch, then it should not be ignored.
Especially be alert immediately on these signs:
• Frequent visible sparks from the switch.
• A loud sound like cracking or bursting
• Burning smell from the switch
• Smoke visible in or around the switch.
• Switch becoming hotter than normal
• Frequent power trips
These signs may be associated with a loose connection, poor contact, overload, or wiring problem.
Why does sparking occur in the switch?
The flow of power may become unstable if the wires or terminals on the back of the switch are not connected properly. This increases the chance of an arc forming around the contact.
Apart from this, due to prolonged use, the metal contacts inside the switch may get damaged or worn out. Overloaded appliances, faulty wiring, incorrect installation of dimmer switches or smart switches can also cause sparking.
What to do immediately if you see a spark?
If there is a strong spark, smoke or burning smell from the switch, do not try to test it by turning it on and off again. Safely turn off the circuit breaker and stop using the switch.
Opening the switch cover and testing the wires yourself can also be risky. Even after turning off the power, it is important to ensure that the circuit is actually de-energized before touching or opening any wiring.
When is the help of an electrician necessary?
If the switch is getting hot, there are frequent sparks, burning smell, burnt wires or the circuit breaker is tripping frequently, it is better to get it checked by a qualified electrician.
Especially the clearly visible spark, smoke, burning smell and hot switch should never be considered normal and continued to be used. By timely repairing faulty switches or wiring, serious dangers like electric shock and fire can be avoided.
