Sugar is used almost every day in the kitchen, but in many homes a problem arises after some time of storing it. The sugar grains begin to stick together and sometimes the entire stock turns into clumps. Moisture also starts appearing on the inner surface of the box. Actually, the biggest reason behind this could be the moisture present in the atmosphere.
Sugar can absorb moisture when it comes in contact with it. Especially in rainy or humid weather, if the container is not closed properly, the sugar can get affected quickly. However, this problem can be reduced significantly by making some small changes in the method of storage.
How to keep sugar from getting wet?
First of all, use a container for sugar which is completely dry and whose lid closes tightly. Before filling sugar in the container, there should not be any water or moisture in it.
Apart from this, do not use a wet spoon to take out sugar. Even a little moisture on the spoon can come in contact with the sugar and make the grains sticky. Therefore it is better to always use dry and clean spoons.
Keep sugar in an airtight glass jar
It may be useful to store sugar in a clean and dry airtight container. A small quantity for daily use can be kept in a separate container, while the rest of the stock should be kept in a tightly closed container.
This will reduce the need to repeatedly open the lid of the entire stock and will also reduce the possibility of sugar coming in contact with moisture.
How useful is the home method of storing rice?
In many homes, the home remedy of placing some rice grains in a sugar container is adopted. Its purpose is to help absorb excess moisture. If there is difficulty in placing the rice directly in the sugar, it can be tied in a small bundle of clean cloth and kept in a container.
However, this should not be considered a sure shot or scientifically proven solution to moisture prevention. The most important measure is to keep the container dry and tightly closed.
Cloves and cinnamon are also used
Some people adopt the homemade method of placing cloves or cinnamon sticks in a sugar container. Due to their strong fragrance, they are considered helpful in protecting from insects like ants. However, their effect of protecting sugar from moisture cannot be considered certain.
If using them, it is important to keep in mind that the spices are clean and dry and that the quality and taste of the sugar is not affected.
Trying to absorb moisture with blotting paper
Another home remedy suggests placing clean and dry blotting paper at the bottom of the container. Its purpose is to help absorb excess moisture. But the paper should not come in direct contact with sugar and should be changed immediately if it gets wet.
The most important thing is proper storage
To keep sugar under control for a long time, it is more important to adopt some basic precautions instead of relying on any one home remedy. Keep sugar in a dry, clean and airtight container, avoid wet spoons and keep the container away from sinks or places where water and steam reach high levels.
By taking care of these small things in humid weather, the sugar grains can remain dry and convenient for use for a long time.
