Riya messaged her friend at around 5 pm. After a few minutes, a blue tick appeared on the message, which means the other person had read it. Riya hung up the phone and started her work, but after some time when she looked at the phone again, there was no answer. The person in front of me came online, remained active for some time and then went offline, but the reply to Riya's message had still not come. From here, many questions started arising in his mind – Is he angry with me? Didn't I say something wrong? Is he deliberately ignoring me?Such situations have become very common these days. Many times a small late reply leads to restlessness, doubt and even arguments in relationships. Especially when the other person has read the message and is also visible online.
Earlier there was patience in waiting, now the answer is needed on the screen.
Till a few years ago, waiting for someone to respond was a different kind of experience. After sending the letter, it took time for it to reach and then it could take several days for the reply to arrive. There was both patience and hope in this wait. But today smartphones have started showing everything instantly. The message was delivered, the person read it, he is also online – still no reply. This information sometimes turns the normal wait into restlessness. Many people start feeling that if the other person had time to read the message then why did he not have time to reply for 15 seconds? However, the reality is not always so simple.
Why does anxiety increase after seeing a blue tick?
A recent research tried to understand the relationship between delay in responding to messages and people's emotional reactions. It found that negative emotions and anxiety may increase as the delay in receiving a response increases. Especially when the person knows that the other person has read his message. That is, where earlier we only knew that the reply has not come, now facilities like Seen, Read and Blue Tick keep giving us continuous updates. Due to this, the person may start looking at the phone again and again and paying attention to the online activity of the other person.
Does every late reply mean ignoring?
no way. There can be many common reasons behind someone responding late. The other person may be in a meeting, busy with work, in an important conversation or may not be mentally in a position to respond at that time. Therefore, just looking at the online status and concluding that “he is ignoring me” can increase the misunderstanding.
If the delay in response is repeatedly causing anxiety or confusion, it is better to wait for some time and then talk in a calm manner. It may be more helpful to express your feelings rather than make accusations. For example, instead of saying, “You deliberately ignore me,” you could say, “I start to worry when I don't hear back for a long time.” This also gives the other person a chance to explain his/her position.
Has read receipts made the wait difficult?
Earlier, when there was no reply to a message, it was not known whether the other person had seen the message or not. Today, Blue Tick and Seen Status inform us that the message has been read. This is where the expectation also increases – “If you have seen the message, then why did you not reply?”
But reading the message and being in a position to respond immediately are two different things. Just because someone has read your message doesn't necessarily mean they have the time, energy, or mental state to respond right away. According to relationship experts, read receipts and last seen can act as psychological triggers for some people. Especially those people who feel more insecure or anxious in relationships, they may start reading the other person's online activities excessively.
Has the relationship turned into a digital courtroom?
Problems in relationships increase when we create our own story by linking the online activities of the other person.
Saw the last scene, saw the online status, saw the story and then came to a conclusion – “He doesn't want to talk to me.”
This can sometimes be linked to mind reading and projection. That is, without asking the other person, we assume what he is thinking or why he is behaving with us in this way. Gradually the relationship may start looking like digital surveillance instead of conversation. By treating every online activity as evidence, even small delays can turn into major disputes.
What is the solution to this?
The most important thing is not to immediately accept your fears as facts. The blue tick is a fact that the message was read, but “he's ignoring me” is an assumption. If there are frequent conflicts in a relationship about response time, both people can work together to set digital boundaries. Such as not expecting immediate reply during work, staying away from the phone for some time and calling or talking face to face for important matters. To strengthen the relationship, it is more important than online status that both the people understand each other's feelings, limitations and needs.
Is there more pressure for digital reply among teenagers?
in 2023 Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology A study published in 2017 included 714 teenagers. The research attempted to understand the pressure of being constantly available digitally. In this, a large number of teenagers reported feeling pressure to respond to friends' messages and to be constantly online. This shows that digital communication not only affects relationships with adults, but the pressure to respond and the expectation of being available online can also cause stress in the friendships of teenagers.
The real question is not the speed of reply, but its quality.
How long someone takes to respond to you may not always be a true measure of your importance in the relationship. Taking a quick reply as proof of love, care and importance can create unnecessary pressure in the relationship. The real question should be that when the other person responded, did he understand what you said? Did he respect you? Were your feelings given importance? Because relationships do not depend only on blue ticks and instant replies. Relationships are strengthened by trust, communication, understanding and giving each other space.
