SIM card security and testing methods

Importance and legal risks of SIM card

Nowadays mobile SIM cards are used for many important functions like calling, banking, online payments and social media. But do you know that an unknown SIM card issued in your name can land you in legal problems? If someone misuses your identity to take a SIM card or misuses the number issued in your name, it can be serious. Therefore, it is essential that you check all the mobile numbers active in your name from time to time.

Why follow SIM card rules?

The Department of Telecommunications has advised users to remain alert to prevent misuse of mobile connections. Violation of rules under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 can lead to a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh. However, the actual quantum of punishment and fine depends on the nature of the offense and the applicable legal provisions.

How to check active sim in your name

You can get information about mobile numbers issued in your name by using the government's Sanchar Sathi portal. For this you do not need to go to any telecom store. First of all, visit the official website. There in the Citizen Centric Services section, select the facility to provide information about the mobile connection issued in your name. Next, enter your 10 digit mobile number and fill the captcha. After submitting the OTP received on the registered number, the list of mobile connections associated with your name will be visible.

reporting unknown number

If you find a suspicious mobile connection, use the reporting options available on the Sanchar Saathi portal. If the number has never been yours, select 'Not My Number' option. If the number is yours but is no longer required, select the 'Not Required' option. Next, submit the report by selecting the corresponding checkbox. On receiving the complaint, the concerned telecom company and the telecommunication department can take action as per rules.

protecting your identity

If your mobile number is used for any financial fraud, fake calls or other illegal activities, the customer information associated with that connection may be exposed during investigation. However, merely having a SIM in your name does not prove a crime. Legal responsibility is decided based on your role, information and available evidence. Therefore, do not give your identity documents to any unknown person, do not share OTP and avoid giving the SIM issued on your ID to someone else for use.
