During a meeting with Russian Supreme Court Chairman Igor Krasnov in Moscow, the CJI said that India and Russia may have different legal traditions, but the judicial institutions of both the countries face similar challenges.

He said that technology can make access to justice easier, but the core spirit of justice will always be linked to human values and sensitivity. Referring to digital initiatives like e-filing, online hearing, AI based translation and virtual judicial assistance, CJI Surya Kant said that the purpose of technology is to strengthen access to justice, and not to replace the human decision process.

The challenge of maintaining trust in the judiciary

CJI Surya Kant said, ‘After my visit to Russia during the BRICS Chief Justices’ meeting held in Sochi in 2024, I have seen an interesting similarity in the judicial systems of both the countries. Both the Supreme Court of India and the Supreme Court of Russia serve large and diverse societies.

Even though our legal traditions are drawn from different histories, we face a common challenge: how to maintain public confidence in the justice system in a rapidly changing world.”

Emphasis on technology and human values

Talking about the increasing use of technology, CJI Surya Kant said that today’s justice system will have to use technology properly, but it will also have to ensure that justice remains linked to the trust of the people. He said that the future of justice will depend on how we connect technological changes with human values.

He pointed out that technology may make access to courts easier and speed up the work, but delivery of justice will always remain a human process.

CJI’s opinion on use of e-court and AI

The CJI said that the digital transformation of courts in India has been done with the idea that technology should strengthen access to justice, and not change the basic principles of justice. This includes features like e-filing, online hearing, digitalization of records, AI based translation and emphasis on technology and human values.
