CM Vijay takes action after food complaints, new orders issued for Amma canteen

The Tamil Nadu government has taken a big step towards modernizing the ‘Amma Canteens’ running across the state. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has directed officials to improve the facilities of canteens and improve the quality of food. Recently, many complaints were received regarding the quality and taste of food served in Amma canteen. After which the government took this decision.

 

On Sunday, the Chief Minister chaired a high-level review meeting of the Energy Department. The power generation, distribution system and financial position of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) were discussed in the meeting. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also had a detailed discussion with the officials regarding Amma Canteen and stressed on providing better food to the public.

There will be changes in more than 620 canteens

At present, 383 Amma canteens are running under the Chennai Municipal Corporation, while 237 canteens are running in other municipal corporations and municipalities in the state. The Chief Minister has given instructions to modernize the kitchens, buildings and necessary equipment of all the canteens. He said that people should get clean, tasty and quality food continuously. The government has also made it clear that the cost of refurbishing the canteens and purchasing equipment will be borne from the general funds of the respective municipal corporations and municipalities.

What is Amma Canteen Scheme?

Amma Canteen, known as ‘Amma Unavagam’ in Tamil language. The objective of this famous public welfare scheme of Tamil Nadu government is to provide clean and nutritious food to the poor, laborers and needy people at very low prices. Food is served here at very nominal prices. Due to which the daily earning people get a lot of support. In the canteen, items like idli for 1 rupee, curd rice for 3 rupees and sambar rice, lemon rice or curry leaf rice for 5 rupees are available.

History of Amma Canteen Scheme

‘Amma Canteen’ scheme was launched in Tamil Nadu on 24 February 2013. It was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J. It was launched on the occasion of Jayalalitha’s birthday. Jayalalitha was affectionately called ‘Amma’ by her supporters, that is why this government canteen scheme was named ‘Amma Canteen’. In the first phase the scheme was limited to Chennai only but later it was expanded to many other cities and small towns of the state. The name and operation of this scheme was retained even after the formation of the DMK government in 2021. Now Chief Minister Vijay is also taking this scheme forward and emphasizing on further improving the facilities and arrangements of the canteens.
