Disintegrated team, search for a big face, who are the faces handling Congress in Uttarakhand?

The ruling party of the three southern states, Congress, is struggling in the north. It has been decades now in Uttarakhand, Congress has not been able to come to power. The hill path has become so risky for the Congress that the party is neither finding a leader of state level stature, nor is any effort being made to find one. Only one face of Congress remains in the news, that of former Chief Minister Harish Singh Rawat.

Harish Singh Rawat is about to reach his 8th decade of age. He remains the only face of Congress till now. He is the one roaming around and visiting the mountains on behalf of Congress. Going to villages, meeting people. There are age related complications but he is also the only popular face of Congress in whose name votes have been cast.

Congress does not have an organization, how will it win the elections?

The state president of Uttarakhand Congress is Ganesh Godia. He got this responsibility about 6 months ago. The interesting thing is that till now he is working without the State Working Committee. When there is no organization then how will they contest the elections a year in advance is also a big question. He is going to visit Delhi, in which it is hoped that talks can be made with the Congress high command.

The Congress, till now, was following the alliance dharma after the swearing-in in Kerala and the election results in Tamil Nadu. Now Congress has 7 states, which state will Congress give priority to, is also a big question. The list of State Working Committee is awaited to be finalized but the matter has not been finalized. Ganesh Godiyal is active but he is lacking in popularity.

Ganesh Godiyal, Karan Mahara, who in the Congress organization?

Before Ganesh Godiyal, Karan Mahara was the state president from April 2022 to November 2025. Lok Sabha elections were also held during his tenure, but even then the State Working Committee could not be formed. Congress could not get any success in Uttarakhand in the Lok Sabha elections. 5 out of 5 seats went to Congress’s account. Karan Mahara is active but is seen only in Ranikhet, the emphasis is on saving his assembly. In such a situation, trouble is increasing for Congress.

What can Congress do now?

Keeping in view the 2027 assembly elections, if the Congress high command delays in this matter, it could lead to huge losses. If Ganesh Godiyal’s visit to Delhi is successful then the election campaign can get a boost. Congress is expecting a change in the organization. The district president, in-charge and block level committees can be strengthened. Efforts have also been made to expand the District Working Committees. Now Congress leaders are saying that there will be a big change in the party. Now, if Ganesh Godiyal is successful in his Delhi tour, then Congress can get reliable soldiers in the state committee.

A face with the support of Congress even today

At present, Congress does not have a more popular face than Harish Rawat. The different thing is that neither he has any post in the organization nor at the central level. He has been the Chief Minister, people like him in both the hills and plains. Now films are being made on them. A documentary named ‘Uttarakhandiyat Ki Oor’ is coming. This film is made on the life of Harish Rawat. Harish Singh is roaming around holding public meetings and meeting people. Elections are next year but Rahul Gandhi came here for the last time only in 2024. The visit of Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge also did not come into discussion. On one hand, BJP has not yet started investing all its resources in the electoral states, Congress is not doing so.

Yashpal Arya, He is the leader of opposition in Uttarakhand Assembly. He is a big leader of Congress. His supporters are considering him as the future Chief Minister. They come from Kumaon region. He is one of the big faces of Dalit society. People like them.

Ganesh Godiyal, Less popular but holding a strong position in the organization. He holds the chairmanship of Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee. He has been handling this important responsibility since November 2025. For the second time, Congress has expressed confidence in him. Comes from Garhwal region, known for aggressive campaigning.

Pritam Singhis MLA from Chakrata and former state president. He has been given the responsibility of election campaign committee. Jaunsar-Bawar have a strong hold in the area. People like them in hilly areas.

Harak Singh Rawat, Are popular faces of Congress. He is counted among the senior leaders of the state. Harak Singh Rawat has the chairmanship of election management. Known for aggressive campaigning. Active in Garhwal region. You may get a big responsibility before the 2027 elections.
 

Bhuvan Chandra Kapri, He is the person who gave a crushing defeat to the current Chief Minister from Khatima Assembly seat. They were discussed across the country. Now, he is the deputy leader of Congress in the Assembly. Congress has young faces but may get a bigger role in 2027. Apart from these, faces like Rajkumar Thukral, Narayan Pal, Bhimlal Arya, Gaurav Goyal and Lakhan Singh Negi are also in the news but are away from big responsibilities.
