Coco Gauff Reaches Madrid Open 2026 Third Round with 6-0 Win
US tennis player Coco Gauff progressed to the third round of the 2026 Madrid Open after a commanding 6-3, 6-0 victory over Leolia Jeanjean on Friday. Entering the tournament in the second round, Gauff initially struggled, losing two of her first three service games, but quickly recovered by breaking Jeanjean’s serve four times in the first set. She then won nine consecutive games to secure the straight-sets win.
The two-time Grand Slam champion excelled on return, converting seven of 16 break points and winning 61.7 per cent of return points alongside 60.6 per cent of first-serve points. The match concluded in 82 minutes.
This marked only the second meeting between Gauff and Jeanjean. Gauff will face Anastasia Potapova in the third round, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser following Madison Keys’ withdrawal. After the match, Gauff commented: “She’s not easy to play. She plays a different rhythm than most players, so just trying to get used to that. I had to hit a lot of jump backhands today, which I’m used to doing one or two a match, and having to do one every other ball was new for me.”
Potapova earned her place in the third round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Zhang Shuai despite limited preparation time.
In the men’s draw, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner also advanced to the third round after defeating Benjamin Bonzi 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-4 in a challenging first-round match. Sinner extended his Masters 1000 winning streak to 23 matches and will next face Danish qualifier Elmer Moller.
