Congress gives edge to the campaign on women’s reservation, will organize press conference in 29 cities tomorrow, will give information to the public
Shiv Shankar Savita- After the Constitution Amendment Bill related to women’s reservation was not passed in the Lok Sabha, the political conflict between the ruling party and the opposition has intensified. On one hand, Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing to take this issue to the public, while on the other hand, Congress has also adopted an aggressive stance and announced to start a nationwide campaign. The party will organize press conferences in 29 cities of the country on April 21, in which senior leaders will be fielded. On behalf of Congress, Supriya Srinet made a scathing attack on the Central Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a press conference. He described the Prime Minister’s recent address to the nation as “a symbol of fear and panic”. They allege that the government wanted to implement divisive and non-democratic delimitation in the name of women’s reservation.
Congress is against the conditions added on respect for women’s reservation.
Congress has clarified that it supports women’s reservation, but opposes the conditions attached to it. The party demands that women’s reservation should be implemented immediately on the basis of existing 543 Lok Sabha seats and one-third i.e. 181 seats should be given to women. Congress says that if the government takes this step, the entire opposition will support it. Taking aim at the Prime Minister, Supriya Shrinet said that Congress’s name was taken 58 times in his 29-minute address, which shows that he is under pressure from the opposition. He alleged that the government talks about women empowerment, but is actually avoiding implementing women’s reservation.
Congress claims – it has been passed unanimously in 2023
Congress claims that the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed unanimously in 2023, but the government has stopped it from being implemented by adding conditions to it. According to the party, this bill was not notified for about 30 months and recently its notification was issued on 16 April 2026. Congress has also cornered the government on the issue of delimitation. The party says that the claim of increasing 50 percent seats in all the states was not mentioned anywhere in the bill. According to Congress leaders, the process of delimitation may reduce the representation of the South, North-East and small states. Giving the example of Assam and Jammu and Kashmir, he said that earlier too there have been disputes regarding reorganization of seats.
Will mention Manipur, Hathras and Unnao incidents
Apart from this, Congress also alleged that the Prime Minister does not want to give their due rights to backward class women. The party says that if women’s reservation is implemented after the caste census, then women from backward classes will also get representation, but the government wants to avoid this. Cornering the government on issues related to women, Congress mentioned cases like Manipur violence, Hathras incident, Unnao, Lakhimpur, and Bilkis Bano. The party alleges that the government’s response to these incidents was not satisfactory. Besides, Congress also raised questions on the participation of women within BJP. According to the party, only 31 of BJP’s 240 MPs are women, while the figure is even less among MLAs.
