New Delhi. EOS-05 satellite was sent into space by GSLV-F17 rocket from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Satish Dhawan Space Centre. This satellite is also known as GISAT-1A. Its weight is about 2,367 kg. The launch took place on 4 September 2026 at 2:55 am from the second launch pad of the Space Centre. This is the 19th flight of GSLV. It is believed to be the heaviest payload ever. This is ISRO's important comeback mission after a gap of eight months.
what will eos-05 do
EOS-05 is India's first imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit. It will remain stable about 36,000 kilometers above the Earth. Will continuously inspect the Indian subcontinent. Normal remote sensing satellites orbit at low altitudes. A picture of a place can be taken once in a few days.
This satellite will be able to take pictures of the entire Indian territory every 30 minutes. For important areas this time will come down to five minutes. It has a 700 mm telescope which will collect data in the visible, near-infrared and short-wave infrared bands.
This satellite will be very useful in disaster management. Real-time monitoring of incidents like floods, cyclones, forest fires will be possible. In agriculture, the condition of crops, soil moisture and health of vegetation can be assessed. Apart from this, it will also help in national security and environmental monitoring. In cloud-free conditions, it will provide repeated images of large areas, providing accurate information to planners and scientists.
Comeback after the failure of 2021
In 2021, in the GSLV-F10 mission, GISAT-1 i.e. EOS-03 satellite could not reach the orbit due to the failure of the cryogenic stage. EOS-05 is an attempt to regain that capability. GSLV -F17 is a three-stage rocket with a height of 51.7 meters and lift-off weight of 420.5 tonnes.
This will release the satellite in a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit from where the satellite itself will reach its orbit. This mission will give new heights to India's space capability. With geosynchronous imaging, the country will have a continuous monitoring tool which it did not have before.
This will strengthen disaster response, agricultural planning and security systems. This step of ISRO will prove to be another important achievement in the direction of self-reliant India. Because of its failures this rocket is called Naughty Boy.
