CPI MP complains to EC over PM’s address to the nation

Bureau Prayagraj- CPI MP P. Santosh Kumar has written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has violated the Model Code of Conduct through his recent address to the nation, and sought immediate intervention of the Election Commission. He further said that telecast of this address on public platforms like Doordarshan and Sansad TV was a misuse of government resources.

In a letter dated April 19, Kumar said the Prime Minister’s address—which was delivered at a time when the Model Code of Conduct is in force in five states—was “political in nature” and contained “partisan claims” and “selective talking points” aimed at influencing public opinion on an issue on which there is an active political contest. “The use of publicly funded platforms for what is essentially a political speech is a serious violation of electoral norms,” Kumar said.

The CPI leader argued that such actions undermine the ‘level playing field’ which the Election Commission has the responsibility to ensure during elections. He warned that failure to act could erode public confidence in the Commission’s impartiality and indicate “institutional collusion”.

Kumar urged the Commission to take “immediate and sincere action”, initiate an investigation into the matter and ensure accountability to maintain the sanctity of the electoral process. In his address on Saturday, the Prime Minister warned Congress and its allies that women would be punished severely for the “sin of foeticide”. Modi apologized to the women and said that the government may have lost the vote, but it would never give up its efforts to empower women.
