The cast of Netflix’s Crew Girl Miku Martineau, Sam Braun and Kyle Clark have revealed what it took to master rowing for the show.
Bringing Netflix’s Crew Girl to life required serious rowing preparation, particularly for Miku, who was simultaneously filming another movie while training to portray Teagan Tao, a newcomer at a prestigious prep school who joins the school’s dysfunctional boys’ crew team.
In chat with AND! Newsthe 21-year-old actress shared, “I was doing night shoots all week, but then on the weekend it was my only free time, so I would have to get up to do rowing training on a lake.”
“But I had such a blast,” she stated.
The demanding training didn’t bother her, who said she “had no complaints” because it allowed her to pick up a new sport and enjoy time out on the water.
But the rowing adventure came with its share of challenges, as the cast spent the fall filming Crew Girl in British Columbia, where the weather could make their time on the water especially difficult.
“There was one day that we did in October,” Sam shared, looking back at the filming process. “I remember it was really foggy and it was cold ‘cause you’re in your leotards and you’re waiting for the drone to get set.”
The weather took another turn when rain moved in, Kyle recalled, leaving the cast and crew on the water during one of their coldest filming days and scrambling to hide hot packets inside their costumes.
“I had like 15,” Miku admitted.
Sam also mentioned that “blankets in the back of the boat” were on hand to help everyone cope with the cold.
“I wish people could see maybe a little bit more of the behind the scenes of not just learning how to row, but mixing in rowing with the technicalities of filming it,” Miku expressed. “Because it’s another ball game—making sure everything is done safe and properly and also the use of cameras with the boats. It’s a very technical thing.”
