Yes, you read that correctly. Chennai Super Kings have appointed a batting coach who was never known for his batting during his playing career.
CSK have named former England spinner Gareth Batty as their new Assistant Coach-cum-Batting Coach. The announcement has surprised everyone because Batty was primarily a bowler and his international batting record was extremely ordinary.
So, the biggest question is obvious: how can a player who could hardly make an impact with the bat become the batting coach of a franchise as successful as CSK?
CSK Make Major Changes to Their Coaching Staff
Chennai Super Kings have completely changed their coaching setup. Mike Hussey previously served as the team’s batting coach, but CSK have now moved in a new direction.
Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been appointed as head coach, while former CSK pacer Mohit Sharma has joined the setup as pace-bowling coach.
Gareth Batty is the latest addition to the leadership group. CSK have appointed him as their Assistant Coach-cum-Batting Coach.
However, it is the “batting coach” part of his role that has shocked everyone.
Gareth Batty Was Primarily a Spin Bowler
Gareth Batty represented England as an off-spinner. He played nine Test matches, 10 ODIs and one T20I for his country.
Batty took 15 wickets in Test cricket and five wickets in ODIs. He did not claim a wicket in his only T20I appearance.
His batting numbers make CSK’s decision even more surprising. Batty scored 149 runs in nine Tests at an average of 14.90. His ODI batting average was just 5.00.
These are not the numbers of a specialist batter or even a proper batting all-rounder. Batty was a bowler who could occasionally contribute a few runs in the lower order.
Therefore, appointing him as a batting coach has raised several questions.
How will someone who was never technically recognised for his batting help CSK’s specialist batters? Why was he not simply appointed as an assistant coach or spin-bowling coach?
That is the most confusing aspect of this decision.
But There Is Another Side to Gareth Batty
Batty’s batting record may not justify his new designation, but his coaching achievements certainly deserve respect.
He captained Surrey during his playing career and developed a strong reputation for his leadership and man-management skills. After retirement, he became an important member of Surrey’s coaching setup.
Batty guided Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Winning one title is an achievement, but dominating the competition for three successive seasons proves that his success was not accidental.
Under Batty’s leadership, Surrey emerged as one of the strongest teams in English domestic cricket. His biggest strengths were tactical planning, dressing-room management and his ability to create a winning culture.
Batty also played hundreds of professional matches during a career spanning more than two decades. Therefore, his cricketing experience and understanding of the game cannot be questioned.
Where Can Gareth Batty Help CSK?
Gareth Batty can certainly help CSK—but perhaps not in the role suggested by his designation.
As a former off-spinner, Batty can work closely with the franchise’s spin-bowling department. He was known for bowling controlled and defensive spells, which is an important skill in modern T20 cricket, where spinners frequently come under pressure.
His experience can help CSK’s bowlers understand how to control the scoring rate, adjust their lengths and respond when batters begin attacking them.
Batty’s leadership qualities could prove even more valuable. He has captained Surrey and coached them to three consecutive County Championship titles. His ability to manage different personalities and build a successful dressing room could provide enormous support to CSK. He can also assist with team planning, player development and tactical decisions. In that sense, appointing him as an assistant coach is completely understandable.
