Who is Asmita Dey?
Asmita Dey, who will make history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, was born on March 22, 2003. She originally hails from Belonia, a small town in the South Tripura district of Tripura. She began her athletic career as an 800-meter runner. Asmita was good at athletics and reached the district-level trials. This marked a turning point in her life.

At these trials, a coach recognized his flexibility, strength, and agility and advised him to take the judo mat. Following impressive performances at the domestic School Games and Khelo India circuits, he was accepted into the Bhopal-based Sports Authority of India (SAI)’s specialized training program in 2018. He honed his skills under the guidance of renowned judo coach Yashpal Solanki.

Sub-Inspector in Uttar Pradesh Police
Commonwealth Games gold medalist Asmita Dey serves as a sub-inspector in the Uttar Pradesh Police and is currently posted in Ghaziabad. She has become the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated her on this achievement. CM Yogi said that every Indian is proud of this golden achievement, which symbolizes the indomitable courage, discipline, determination, and hard work of the country’s daughters.
Asmita was devastated by the death of her father
Asmita’s late father, Arjun Dey, ran a small bicycle repair shop. Just seven months ago, in December 2025, she passed away from a brain stroke. After her father’s death, Asmita was devastated and considered quitting the sport. However, her family, coaches, and teammates kept her going.
