Threat looms on ceasefire of 2022
In a statement issued on Friday after a meeting a day earlier, the Yemen government's National Defense Council said it is at the forefront of protecting freedom of maritime movement. The council also condemned the new attack by Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia. Amidst the increasing conflict, the danger of breaking the fragile ceasefire, which has largely stopped Yemen's civil war from 2022 till now, has increased.
About 1.5 lakh people were killed in Yemen earlier
Yemen is among the poorest countries in the Arab world. Amidst the current situation, concern has increased regarding the safety and condition of about 4 crore people. Earlier, in the Yemeni civil war that started in 2014, about 1.5 lakh people died between 2014 and 2021. During this period, a large number of people were on the verge of starvation.
More than 46 thousand people displaced due to increasing fighting
The UN migration agency said on Friday that due to increased fighting last week, more than 46 thousand people had to flee their homes. Abdusattar Esoev, mission chief in Yemen for the International Organization for Migration, said people fled their homes with whatever they could in search of safety. He said the number of displaced people has more than doubled this week and is likely to increase rapidly.
