India head coach VVS Laxman has praised the team's resilience and composure after its gold-medal-winning campaign at the Asian Games, saying the players showed a “champion's mindset” to successfully defend their continental title.
India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the men's cricket final at Karogi Athletic Park in Nisshin to retain the gold medal.
Speaking to reporters after returning to India, Laxman said defending the title made the achievement particularly significant.
“Defending the gold is also a very special moment for all of us,” he said.
Laxman credited the squad for consistently responding to challenges during the tournament, particularly when weather and playing conditions made matches difficult.
“Very pleased with the way the team played. Getting a gold in the Asian Games is a matter of great pride. And I think everyone played to their potential,” he said.
The former India batsman also highlighted the depth of talent in the squad, praising the players' work ethic and mentality.
“We are very lucky to have so many players who are so talented and hard-working and have a great work ethic, and also, most importantly, who have got a champion's mindset,” Laxman said.
He said the team's ability to remain composed in pressure situations was a key factor behind its successful campaign.
Despite being tested by the weather and conditions, Laxman said the players stepped up when it mattered most and maintained their composure under pressure to deliver the desired result for the country.
The gold was India's successful defense of the men's cricket title at the continental multi-sport event.
