What is the main advantage of smart meter??
Smart meters reduce the need for a person to physically visit home each time for readings, as meter data can be accessed remotely. The customer gets the facility to view the usage data through digital means. This can make it relatively easy to understand actual readings, estimated bills and changes in usage.
Does smart meter result in higher bill??
Mere installation of smart meters does not automatically increase electricity tariff per unit. The applicable tariff, actual consumption, fixed charges and other applicable factors are important in the bill. But due to smart meter getting more accurate or regular consumption readings, the estimated bill may be different depending on the actual usage. Therefore, it cannot be immediately assumed that the bill has gone up which means that the meter has taken a wrong reading.

What the government rules say?
As per Central Government Rules 2023 there is a provision to take reading of Smart Meters remotely at least 1 time per day. After installation of smart meter, penalty cannot be levied based on Maximum Demand of previous period. Also, if the Maximum Demand recorded by the smart meter is more than the sanctioned load, there is a provision to calculate the actual demand recorded in the relevant billing cycle.
What customers should check?
After installing a smart meter, it is useful to keep checking the usage through an app or available digital means. If the bill seems higher than expected, check the units, meter reading and other charges on the bill. If there is a complaint, the inquiry can be made to Mahavitaran.
