Washington, 30 October 2026: According to the new annual figures of the 'American Community Survey' recently released by the United States Census Bureau, the number of people identifying only with Indian origin in America has increased to an estimated 54.1 lakh in the year 2025. With this, Indians have become the largest single Asian community in America. According to the detailed report released by the Bureau, this figure was estimated to be 5.09 million in the year 2024, which will increase to 5.41 million in 2025. That is, there has been a significant increase of more than 3,15,000 in this population in a single year. If Indians with mixed or ethnic identities from other communities are also included, the total figure increases to 59.1 lakh.

With these figures, Indians have acquired a leading position among Asian communities. In this regard, Indians have left behind Chinese (other than Taiwan) citizens, whose exclusive population is estimated at 4.65 million. However, taking into account connections with other groups, the total number of Chinese citizens comes to 5.97 million, which is almost equal to the total population of Indians. It is noteworthy that the total population of America in 2025 was estimated to be 341.8 million.

  • India ranks second in terms of birthplace

India is second after Mexico in the list of birthplaces of people of foreign origin in America. In 2025, an estimated 3.40 million people living in America were born in India, while in 2024 this figure was 3.16 million. Mexico leads with a population of 10.61 million, followed by India, China (2.40 million) and Philippines (2.24 million). The total foreign-born population in America was estimated at 50.41 million.

Interesting figures have also emerged regarding the areas in which the Indian community has settled in America. Approximately 1.02 million Indians live in California, 7,08,000 in Texas, approximately 471,000 in New Jersey, approximately 420,000 in New York, approximately 288,000 in Illinois and approximately 239,000 in Florida. According to the survey, the national median income of American families will increase to $ 84,780 in 2025, which was earlier $ 81,604.

Apart from this, the Census Bureau has also released data regarding electric vehicles for the first time. Nationally, about 5.5% of households own an EV, but the proportion is highest in California, at an estimated 14 percent. At the county level, Santa Clara County, home to Silicon Valley, leads the country, with approximately 24 percent of households owning an electric vehicle. The survey has proven to be the only reliable means of providing accurate local level information on important topics such as education, employment, poverty, health insurance and local infrastructure (80 percent of households have a public sewer system).
