Donald Trump’s claim, said ‘Iran promised not to make nuclear weapons’
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has recently said that Iran has agreed not to make nuclear weapons. He called it a big success. In a podcast of Fox News and New York Post, Trump said that in the conversation, Iran has made it clear that it will never have a nuclear bomb.
According to Trump, the main reason for the conflict with Iran on February 28 was to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The White House fact sheet lists 74 occasions since 2011 when Trump said Iran should not get nuclear weapons.
Nuclear experts revealed
According to media reports, nuclear experts say that the promise Trump is talking about is not new. Iran has been saying for 50 years that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Tehran has reiterated its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons through written agreements, statements and even the Supreme Leader’s fatwa.
According to Gary Seymour, an expert on Iran affairs in the Obama administration, this is not a major concession. He said the real question is how many restrictions this promise imposes on Iran’s uranium enrichment program.
In fact, in the first paragraph of the Iran Nuclear Deal of 2015 it is also written that Iran will not make nuclear weapons under any circumstances. Trump had separated America from this agreement during his first term. After this, Iran accelerated its nuclear program, but continued to refuse to produce weapons.
questions on trust
Iran has been part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty since 1970. Under this treaty, countries get help in nuclear technology, but in return they have to promise not to make weapons. In 2005, Iran told the IAEA that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had issued a fatwa declaring nuclear weapons prohibited in Islam.
Still, many experts do not trust Iran’s promises. Daniel Roth of United Against Nuclear Iran says that despite the evidence, Iran has long been saying not to make weapons. A 2015 IAEA report also acknowledged that Iran had worked on nuclear weapons designs as far back as 2009.
In 2018, Israel made some documents public which showed that Iran was planning to make weapons. The Trump administration had also attacked Iran’s nuclear sites in June 2025, which it calls part of its strictness. Now Trump is again demanding zero enrichment. That means Iran will have to completely stop uranium enrichment and remove equipment like centrifuges.
