Elon Musk expressed concern over India’s declining birth rate… said – there will be a big impact on the population structure!

New York. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has expressed concern about India’s declining birth rate. He has said that India’s birth rate has now reached below the replacement level, which can have a big impact on the population structure in the long run.

Data shared on social media

Elon Musk made this comment while sharing a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He said that India’s birth rate has already fallen below the replacement level among the educated class many years ago. The data cited by Musk states that India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has declined to about 1.9, while the replacement level is considered to be 2.1.

  • More sharp decline in big cities

The report claims that the fertility rate in the country’s capital Delhi has come down to around 1.2, which is considered lower than many developed countries. According to experts, family size is continuously decreasing in urban areas due to education, lifestyle and economic reasons.

    Confirmation in UN report also

The State of World Population Report 2025 of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) also states that India’s fertility rate has fallen from 2.1 to 1.9. The report says that India has now become the most populous country in the world, but despite this the pace of population growth is gradually decreasing.

    Major changes in population trends

India’s population currently exceeds 1.46 billion. Experts believe that the declining birth rate could affect the country’s economic structure, labor market and social balance in the coming decades. However, the report also shows that while there has been improvement in health and education in the country, challenges related to inequality, child marriage and women still exist.
