‘Don’t remove Gambhir, change the system…’, Sanjay Manjekar’s advice to BCCI
The Indian cricket team lost the T20 series first to Ireland 2-0 and then to England 4-0. Due to this poor play, India has lost its No. 1 T20 ranking and England has now become the No. 1 team in the world. After this defeat, people are demanding the removal of head coach Gautam Gambhir from the post and there is also pressure on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Former player Sanjay Manjrekar has come to the rescue of Gautam Gambhir. Manjrekar has told the Board of Control for Cricket in India that the easiest thing to do is to remove Gambhir or captain Shreyas Iyer but if you really want to improve, then fire those people who have made the IPL pitches so easy that our batsmen are flopping on foreign pitches.
When Shreyas Iyer was made the new captain of the T20 team after Suryakumar Yadav, everyone thought that the team would do well but it did not happen. The Indian team has lost 6 out of its last 7 matches. Ireland defeated India 2–0 and then England defeated India 4–0 in the 5-match series. Throughout the series, India’s batsmen were struggling to score runs and the team was able to score more than 200 runs only once. This happened when India had got a huge target of 258 runs in the 5th match. Apart from this, coach Gambhir is also being accused that his behavior with Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sanju Samson was not professional and he was very confused about the team.

Sanjay Manjrekar’s statement
Sanjay Manjrekar shared a video on social media and said, ‘The easiest thing to do at this time would be to remove Gautam Gambhir from the post of coach, change the captain and drop those players from the team who did not play well in Ireland and England. This would be absolutely the wrong approach. If India has to correct its mistakes, then they will have to understand the real reason for this defeat. Our team was not ready to play abroad because the selectors chose the players after seeing their IPL performance.
Manjrekar raised questions on the manner of IPL. He said, ‘For the last 4-5 years, IPL has put a fake shine on the game of Indian batsmen. Scoring runs in IPL is easier than I have ever seen in my entire life. IPL pitches are like smooth marble stones, where the ball hits the bat very comfortably and the batsmen hit big shots with ease. For this reason, when the ball rotates or swings even a little, our batsmen do not understand how to play. Because of this game of IPL, selectors are not able to recognize real and good players.
Disadvantages of making IPL a business
Sanjay Manjrekar advised the Board of Control for Cricket in India that they should look into the matter in depth. He said, ‘The Board of Control for Cricket in India should fire those people who advise the board to make the pitches completely flat to make the IPL more popular and earn money. More than 200 or 250 runs are scored in every match on these pitches. More runs scored increases the number of people watching matches on TV, but its biggest loss is when players go to play for the country on foreign pitches.

Trust in players like Shubman Gill
Manjrekar further said, ‘The selectors will have to use their brain and choose such players who can score runs even on difficult pitches. Players like Shubhman Gill have the ability to bat well in T20 in Ireland, England or any other country in the world. The fault in this is not of Gautam Gambhir, but of our system which is making the players habit of playing on easy pitches whereas the next T20 World Cup is to be held in Australia where the pitches will be completely different and difficult.
