The Delhi High Court has taken a strict stance regarding violence and violation of election rules during the Delhi University Students Union elections. The court has issued show cause notices to 140 candidates and related student organizations, prohibiting them from taking out victory processions after the elections.
Tezzbuzz Desk– Voting for Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections 2026 is taking place on Friday. Meanwhile, the petition related to violence that came up during the election campaign was heard in the Delhi High Court. During the hearing, the court issued notices to 140 contesting candidates and student organizations and asked them to file their replies within two weeks.
The court made it clear that no victory procession of any kind will be taken out after the election results are declared. The court also expressed displeasure over alleged violation of rules, convoys of vehicles without number plates and use of weapons during the election campaign.
Earlier in the hearing held on Thursday, the High Court had sought answers from the Delhi University Administration, Delhi Police and the Central Government regarding the violence that took place during the election campaign. The court had warned that if it was not satisfied with the reply filed, then the counting of votes and release of results of DUSU elections could be stayed.
In Friday's hearing, replies were filed by the DU administration and Delhi Police. After this, the court asked the candidates and student organizations why collective election damages should not be imposed on them for violating election rules.
The High Court said that violation of rules in elections is being taken seriously and collective fine can be imposed for this. The court also referred to its orders given during the previous DUSU elections.
The court also said that incidents like a candidate slapping a teacher after winning the election have come to light. The court clarified that it is not treating student organizations differently and expects all to follow election rules.
Now the next hearing in the matter will be held in November after receiving the replies of all the concerned candidates and student organizations.
