Vehicle owners have many concerns and questions regarding the introduction of 20 percent ethanol-blended petrol (E20) across the country. The biggest question is whether ethanol-based gasoline damages vehicle engines. In the wake of ongoing discussions and concerns on the subject, a prestigious institution in the country of IIT Kanpur Researchers have made an important and promising claim. Institute researchers say that in their study of E20 petrol No significant reduction in vehicle mileage was observed due to use. Also, there is no evidence that E20 fuel causes any damage to current or older vehicle engines.

What affects mileage? Research from IIT Kanpur

Recently, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that the use of E20 fuel in certain vehicles can reduce mileage by up to 5 percent. However, its advantages far outweigh these minor disadvantages. According to reports, Dhruv Raj Karna, project scientist at the Engine Research Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur, said that the reduction in mileage by using E20 fuel is actually less than 5 percent, according to research conducted at IIT Kanpur.

Dhruv Raj Karana explained that this 5 percent drop in mileage could be due to factors other than fuel. Whether two consecutive tests are conducted using regular or pure gasoline, similar results may be obtained. Real reason for mileage drop: According to an IIT study, any change in mileage depends more on driver’s driving style, road conditions and vehicle maintenance than on fuel.

Does the engine actually get damaged?

Project Scientist Dhruv Raj Karana said that thorough and extensive testing has proven that using E20 fuel does not cause any engine damage, corrosion or other technical problems. He completely dismissed the reports circulating on social media claiming that E20 petrol was causing damage to vehicles. Karan termed these claims as scientifically baseless and advised motorists to follow their vehicle manufacturer’s manual and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas guidelines instead of relying on unverified posts shared online.

E85 fuel has also been successfully tested

The research is being conducted under the leadership of Professor Avinash Kumar Aggarwal, Head of the Engine Research Laboratory at IIT Kanpur. His team has been doing extensive research on ethanol-blended fuels for a long time. The team also successfully tested E85 fuel (which contains 85 percent ethanol). However, Dhruv Raj Karan also explained that such high levels of blending require specially designed engines and compatible fuel systems.

“It is a cleaner and better fuel,” the ministry said.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas recently released a detailed Q&A document to respond to criticism of the ethanol blended gasoline program. According to the ministry, E20 petrol is cleaner, higher quality and more efficient than E10 or refined petrol. The government conducted years of scientific testing, extensive consultation with vehicle manufacturers and increased domestic ethanol production before implementing it nationwide. This results in a significant reduction in carbon emissions, which is extremely beneficial for the environment.
