Hardeep Singh Puri on E85 Price in India: Amidst the ongoing debate regarding E20 petrol, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has made a big announcement regarding E85 fuel. He said that the government is working rapidly on E85 fuel and it will soon be made available on a wide scale. He also indicated that the price of E85 will be about Rs 20 per liter less than E20. If we look at the current prices, the price of E85 can be around Rs 80 to Rs 85 per liter.

What is E85 fuel?

E85 is a fuel that contains a mixture of approximately 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol. However, it can be used only in vehicles with flex-fuel engines. At present the number of such vehicles in India is limited and auto companies are working on this technology.

E85 will be 20 rupees cheaper than E20

Hardeep Singh Puri said that the long term goal of the government is to take ethanol blending to 85 percent. He told that E85 is currently available in limited places, but soon it will be launched on a large scale. He said that the price of E85 will be about Rs 20 per liter less than E20, which will provide cheaper fuel to the consumers.

How much benefit was there from ethanol blending?

According to the Petroleum Minister, due to increase in ethanol blending in petrol, India has so far saved 309.98 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil import. This has reduced the pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Apart from this, he claimed that due to ethanol blending, emissions of 931.502 lakh metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) have also been reduced, thereby promoting environmental protection.

What did Puri say on the claims of engine damage due to E20?

In recent months, many drivers have claimed on social media that the use of E20 petrol has reduced the mileage of vehicles and affected the engine. On this, Hardeep Singh Puri said that such complaints have not been confirmed with the government. He said that Maruti Suzuki has serviced around 1.5 crore vehicles and there has been no confirmed report of engine damage due to ethanol. He also said that earlier some insurance companies had raised concerns about ethanol, but now that issue has also been resolved.

What is the government’s stand regarding mileage?

In response to the questions being raised on mileage, the Minister said that the technology should not be assessed only on the basis of mileage. According to him, ethanol blended fuel provides benefits like better octane rating, better acceleration and less harm to the environment. He said that ethanol is an important step towards the clean and sustainable energy system of the future.
