Why has earthquake activity increased in India?
Earthquakes of mild and moderate intensity have been recorded in different parts of India in the last few months. Incidents of earth tremors have been reported from time to time in Delhi-NCR, Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Andaman-Nicobar Islands and many states of the North-East. According to experts, the Indian Plate is continuously colliding with the Eurasian Plate, due to which seismic activities are naturally high especially in and around the Himalayan region. At the same time, geological movements occurring under the sea in the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean region also cause earthquakes from time to time. Scientists say that most mild earthquakes are part of normal tectonic activity, but people should always be alert and follow safety guidelines during an earthquake.
