Tokyo. A moderate intensity earthquake shook people in the eastern part of Japan and around the capital Tokyo in the early hours of Sunday. The earthquake's intensity was initially measured at 5.9, while the US Geological Survey recorded it at 5.8. More than 20 people were injured in the earthquake, although most suffered minor injuries. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of about 70 kilometers from the ground in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. This area is considered sensitive from earthquake point of view. A total of 23 people were reported injured in four provinces. Of these, nine people each were injured in Saitama and Kanagawa, four in Chiba and one in Ibaraki.

Some local train services, including express trains linking Tokyo and Narita airports, were affected and delayed due to the earthquake. However, Shinkansen bullet train services remained normal. An underground water pipe burst in Tokyo's Koto Ward, flooding the road, which was later repaired.
Electricity supply disrupted in many houses?
After the earthquake, power supply to about 460 houses was disrupted, but power was restored by Sunday morning. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi set up a government task force to assess the potential damage. At the same time, the Nuclear Regulatory Authority said that no abnormality was found in any nuclear plant or other facilities related to nuclear material in the country. The earthquake once again highlighted the seriousness of the threat of natural disasters in Japan.
