He said that eating chicken biryani on river Ganga is not a crime. Also, no law has been made to stop this, so it is not justified to keep the youth in jail for several months.
This incident happened in the month of March this year, when 14 youths were having an Iftar party in a boat. All of them were arrested for eating chicken biryani. Referring to this case, Supreme Court Judge Ujjwal Bhuyan made his remarks in the courtroom on Saturday, July 25. For your information, let us tell you that the accused in the case were granted bail from jail after a few months. Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan expressed displeasure on this. In the month of March 2026, 14 boys had an Iftar party on the river Ganga in Varanasi. These people were accused that they not only ate chicken biryani in the middle of river Ganga, but also threw chicken bones in the river. On the basis of this allegation, the police arrested the accused. After this the court had also rejected his bail petition. A few months later, in May, the Allahabad High Court granted bail to the youth.

Regarding the Iftar party incident, Supreme Court judge Ujjwal Bhuyan said, ‘Can’t the accused be granted bail in such a case, which is not actually a crime? In my opinion, eating chicken biryani is not a crime. In such a situation, is it right to arrest the accused and keep them in jail for several months?

Apart from this, Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan also made important comments regarding the arrest of the students protesting on the campus. He said that expressing one’s views is the fundamental right of all citizens. If students express their views peacefully in their college campuses and protest, they are arrested. After this, they do not even get bail for 30 to 40 days.
