Pune, Oct 2:
Eight students from a private coaching academy in Pune drowned while swimming at Diveagar beach in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Thursday. All eight bodies were recovered and the students were declared dead.
The students were part of a 48-member group from Winners Academy in Alandi, comprising 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers.
According to authorities, the students entered the sea and were swept away after apparently misjudging the water current and depth.
Local residents, police and water sports operators joined the rescue operation. Bhau Maruti Salunkhe and his team from a local water sports centre helped search for and recover the bodies. Police shifted the bodies to the Primary Health Centre at Borli Panchatan for further procedures.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
