Why Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the most expensive in the country?

The total length of the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway is approximately 94.5 km. It is the first ‘access-controlled’ expressway in India, which was fully opened to traffic in 2002. Going by the official figures and current fiscal year rates, a car driver has to pay a whopping Rs 320 toll for this 94.5 km distance. This means that the toll rate per kilometer here generally falls around Rs 3.40, which is Rs 1 more than the average rate of any other national highway in the country.

According to commuters, if you start your journey from Pune and reach the Mumbai border, the total cost with different link tolls goes up to Rs 430. In this, light commercial vehicles (LCVs) have to pay Rs 495, while buses and big trucks have to pay a toll ranging from Rs 940 to Rs 2,165. This road is the most expensive to travel in India by distance.

Expensive toll still the first choice of passengers, what is the reason?

Although the toll rates have skyrocketed, the popularity of this expressway has not diminished. The biggest reason for this is the ‘unprecedented time savings’. Before the construction of this expressway, traveling on the old Mumbai-Pune highway used to take 3 to 5 hours due to traffic jams at the ghats. Now the same journey is completed in just one and a half to two hours. Faster travel saves fuel and reduces wear and tear on vehicles.

Also, many security measures have been taken on the expressway. In recent times, new ‘missing link’ projects, grand tunnels and flyovers have been completed to avoid difficult turns and traffic jams at Khandala Ghat. This has reduced the risk of landslides during monsoons and has made travel safer. According to passengers, the transaction seems ‘money-saving’ due to the time savings and security, even if it costs more.

According to experts in the financial sector, the construction of such gigantic infrastructure and its 24-hour maintenance requires an investment of thousands of crores of rupees. To recover this cost and maintain the road quality, the administration has to keep the toll rates high. The country is coming up with bigger routes like the Virar-Alibag Multimodal Corridor or the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, where the toll rates are likely to be even higher.
