'Extremely Heartbreaking': Rahul Gandhi, Kharge Mourn Nana Patekar's Death

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday expressed grief over the death of veteran actor Nana Patekar, remembering his powerful performances and memorable characters that left a lasting impression on Indian cinema and audiences.

Patekar died in Goa on Thursday at the age of 75. An official confirmation from Manipal Hospital, Goa, stated that he was found unconscious at his residence in Dona Paula and was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Rahul Gandhi described the news as “extremely heartbreaking”, saying Patekar had left an indelible mark on Indian cinema and in the hearts of audiences through his acting and characters.

“At this time of grief, my deepest condolences are with his bereaved family, friends and supporters,” Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X in Hindi.

Kharge also paid tribute to the actor, recalling his versatile contribution to cinema as well as his concern for farmers and underprivileged sections.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Nana Patekar. His remarkable performances, immense and versatile contribution to Indian cinema, and compassion for farmers and the underprivileged will always be remembered,” Kharge said.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed grief, describing Patekar's death as “extremely heartbreaking” and offering condolences to his family and fans.

Patekar, whose career spanned more than four decades, was known for his intense performances, distinctive dialogue delivery and portrayal of complex characters across Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Maharashtra, he made his Hindi film debut with Gaman in 1978. He gained wider recognition with films such as Salaam Bombay! and Parindafollowed by acclaimed performances in embers, Tirangaa, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Yeshwant, Ab Tak Chappan, Apaharan and Raajneeti.

He was also closely associated with Marathi cinema and theater and made his directorial debut with Prahaar: The Final Attack in 1991.

Patekar also displayed his comic side as Uday Shetty in the welcome franchise, a role that became particularly popular with audiences.

His other notable films included Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Wajood, Hu Tu Tu, gang, Deewangee, भूत, Welcome Back, Natsamrat and The Vaccine War.

Patekar was honored with the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and the arts. During his career, he also won three National Film Awards and several other honors.
