In many areas of Bihar, incidents of wild animals entering populated areas and harming people are frequent. Sometimes, wild animals attack humans, and sometimes prey on farmers’ domestic animals. Furthermore, large wild animals like elephants also cause significant damage to homes and crops.
To provide relief to those affected by such tragic incidents, the Bihar government has established a clear compensation system. Under the Forest Department’s new provisions, a substantial amount has been allocated for fixed compensation for human casualties, loss of livestock, and damage to houses and crops. Let’s explore these four important pieces of good news from the government in detail.
First good news: Rs 10 lakh will be given in case of death or disability.
If unfortunately a person dies or becomes permanently disabled due to a wild animal attack, then in such a situation there is a provision of providing huge financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh from the government.
Additionally, a seriously injured person receives an assistance amount of ₹1.44 lakh, and a moderately injured person receives ₹24,000. The scheme covers dangerous wildlife such as tigers, leopards, elephants, bears, gaurs, wild boars, hyenas, jackals, wolves, rhinoceroses, wild dogs, crocodiles, and alligators.
Second good news: Compensation will also be given on the death of pets
Wild animal attacks not only target humans but also farmers’ domestic animals. Keeping this in mind, financial assistance has been established for livestock losses.
According to the provision, if a cow, buffalo, or bull dies in an attack, the owner can receive assistance of up to 24,000 rupees. However, separate rules have been established for assistance in the case of sheep or goats, providing significant relief to livestock owners.
Third good news: Financial help even in case of house collapse and crop loss
Large wild animals like elephants, gaurs, and rhinos often invade rural areas and destroy homes. In such cases, the government provides assistance based on the extent of the damage. If a permanent house is completely damaged, assistance of up to 96,000 rupees is available.
At the same time, a provision of 48,000 rupees is provided for a completely destroyed kutcha house with mud walls and a thatched roof or tin shed. The government provides compensation of up to 48,000 rupees for serious damage to a pucca house, 24,000 rupees for severely damaged kutcha houses, and up to 12,000 rupees for minor damage.
Fourth good news: Farmers will get Rs 50,000 if their crops are destroyed.
There’s some relief for farmers who are trampling or destroying crops in their fields due to wild animals. There’s a provision for compensation of 50,000 rupees per hectare for crop damage caused by elephants, jackals, and wild boars.
