FIFA World Cup 2026: Another big upset for Cape Verde, holding two-time world champion Uruguay to a 2-2 draw

Another biggest upset in the football world has been seen in Group H of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Cape Verde team, which is entering the tournament for the first time, has left the world on edge with its performance. In this exciting match played in a packed stadium in Miami, Cape Verde changed the course of the match by holding two-time former world champion Uruguay to a 2-2 draw. This was the first encounter between Uruguay and Cape Verde at any level in international football history. Earlier, this new team, which had surprised the legendary team Spain in its opening match, has now surprised another superpower of football.

Kevin Pina’s historic goal from 30 yards, Uruguay’s defense collapsed

Cape Verde made a very aggressive and courageous start in the first half of the match, and they got the advantage in the 21st minute. Cape Verde’s star player Kevin Pina took the risk of taking a direct shot on a free-kick from more than 30 yards away from the goal post. Pina’s ground shot was so powerful that it broke through Uruguay’s strong defensive wall and went straight into the bottom corner of the net. Uruguay’s experienced goalkeeper Fernando Muslera looked completely helpless in front of this shot. With this magical goal, Kevin Pina has become the first player to score a goal for Cape Verde in the history of the FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay counterattacks; Maxi Araujo and Cannobio gave the lead

After trailing 0-1, the Uruguayan team launched a tremendous counter attack like a wounded lion. Just before half time, Uruguay deployed most of its players on the forward line. Manuel Ugarte delivered a dangerous pass inside the box, on which Rodrigo Bentancur leaped high into the air and hit a powerful header. The ball bounced off the defender and hit the bottom of the goal post. Maxi Araújo, standing there alert, showed leopard-like agility and put the ball into the goal post through a diving header and leveled the score at 1-1. Right after this, in stoppage time, Uruguay completely turned the tide of the match. Manuel Ugarte’s cross was headed in front of the goal post by Araújo, where Agustín Canobbio arrived at the right time to score from close-range to give Uruguay a thrilling 2–1 lead.

Cape Verde turned the tables again in the second half, Spain remained on top

Cape Verde, which was lagging at one time, did not give up in the second half and took advantage of the mistake of Uruguay’s defense and scored another brilliant goal to level the match at 2-2. After this, both the teams tried hard to take the lead, but till the end of the match no more goals could be scored and the match ended in a draw. From this historic draw, both the teams got one point each. At present, if we talk about the latest equations of Group-H, the Spanish team is at the first position, Uruguay is at the second position and Cape Verde is firmly at the third position, while the Saudi Arabian team is lagging behind at the fourth position without any points.
