According to the information, this action has been taken after the press conference of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in the Haldwani purification case. A case has been registered against him under various sections of SC/ST Act and Indian Justice Code (BNS) in Haldwani Kotwali, Uttarakhand. This matter has come to light after a complaint by officials of Shri Ram Sena Charitable Service Trust. Vinod Arya and Amit Kumar, residents of Haldwani and two Dalit officials associated with the Trust, had filed a complaint with the police alleging that Rahul Gandhi had used objectionable and caste-related words against the Scheduled Castes during his recent press conference.

Police said on Sunday that an FIR has been registered against Rahul Gandhi on the complaint of a member of the Valmiki community in Haldwani. The complaint alleges that the Congress leader gave a casteist color to a religious ritual held at the venue of the AICC chief's event.

The FIR has been registered under various sections of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS), relating to deliberate acts intended to promote enmity between groups and to hurt religious sentiments. Police said that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 has also been invoked.

Amit Kumar, a resident of Jawahar Nagar and member of Shri Ram Sena Charitable Service Trust, claimed in the complaint lodged at Haldwani police station that he was present during the “ritual and cleanliness drive” and that Gandhi's comments at a press conference in Delhi on August 29 hurt the sentiments of the community.
