Former Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov dies at 73: RIA
RIA reported on Thursday that Sergei Borisovich Ivanov, Russia’s former defence minister and former special presidential representative for environmental protection, ecology and transport, had died at the age of 73. The report said the news was announced by the VTB United League through its Telegram channel.
According to the league’s statement quoted by RIA, “Sergei Borisovich Ivanov has passed away.” The message also extended condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
Ivanov was a prominent figure in Russia’s political and security establishment and one of Vladimir Putin’s most trusted longtime allies. He held several major posts over the years, including defence minister, deputy prime minister and chief of staff of the Presidential Executive Office. RIA identified him as a former defence minister and former special envoy of the Russian president on environmental, ecology and transport issues.
His public career also reflected deep roots in Russia’s security services. Ivanov served in the Soviet-era KGB and later the FSB, and he held the rank of retired colonel general. That background made him a key member of the country’s political-security elite for decades.
In 2016, Putin appointed him as special representative for environmental protection, ecology and transport. He remained an important figure in state circles even after leaving that post. According to TASS, Ivanov continued to serve as one of the 13 permanent members of Russia’s Security Council, showing his lasting influence within the Kremlin system.
The report did not state a cause of death. It focused on the announcement of his passing and the condolence message issued by the league. RIA published the item on June 26, 2026, and said Ivanov was 73 years old.
