Why do people take sannyasa in Jainism?

According to religious experts, Jainism teaches people that one should conquer emotions like passion and hatred. In Jainism, it is believed that everything present in nature is alive and a person should avoid harming it. Do not destroy every element of nature, hence people should have patience, restraint and always have a sense of service towards others. However, when a person lives a worldly life, he may commit sinful acts knowingly or unknowingly. To get freedom from these sins, people renounce worldly life. Religious experts believe that by adopting the path of renunciation, a person attains salvation and becomes free from the bondage of life and death.

What is the importance of renunciation in Jainism?

There are five principles of Jainism, which millions of people adopt in their lives. Those five principles are Ahimsa, Satya, Acharya, Brahmacharya and Aparigraha. According to the experts of Jainism, people should live their lives according to these principles.

1. Non-violence Lord Mahavir had said that a person should live his entire life on the path of non-violence. The path of non-violence is the essence of the life of an ideal person. According to religious scriptures, Lord Mahavir had said that 'Ahimsa Paramo Dharma', which means that the ultimate dharma of a person's life is non-violence.

According to this principle a person has to avoid three types of violence. Under this, people should not hurt others. Second, a person should not indulge in mental violence i.e. mentally exploit others or have negative thoughts towards others. Apart from this, one should not hate others. In worldly life it becomes very difficult for a person to follow the path of non-violence.

2. Living in truth Another principle in Jainism is that one should speak the truth in every situation. However, small children who lie unknowingly do not incur the sin of unknowingly telling lies. When a person's understanding increases, he should follow the path of truth.

Apart from this, one should not consider oneself as supremely knowledgeable by claiming someone else's knowledge as one's own. Through this principle, people should also understand that a person cannot steal the happiness of others by appropriating others' things.

4. Celibacy A person should free his body, mind and consciousness from worldly pleasures and adopt the path of renunciation, through which the person gets freedom from worldly pleasures, stress and jealousy.

5. Aparigraha In this theory it is said that a person should gradually give up attachment to material things by adopting the path of Mahavir. After that one should give up spicy food and wealth. Nowadays many people are taking initiation by following these principles.
