Team India: Team India’s major weakness will be removed, Gambhir recommended making this stalwart the coach

53-year-old Bahule is currently the spin bowling coach of Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. However, after the end of the current season, he will part ways with the franchise and take up new responsibilities with Team India.

Bahutule can become the spin coach of Team India
According to BCCI sources, the Indian team was feeling the need of an experienced spin bowling specialist for a long time. For this reason, Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and top officials of the board contacted Bahutule. Let us tell you that in the last few years, Indian batsmen have been seen struggling against spin bowlers even at home. The clean sweep in the last Test series against New Zealand is proof of this.

Bahutule played 2 tests for India
Sairaj Bahutule’s cricket career may not have been long at the international level, but his record in domestic cricket has been excellent. He played 2 Tests and 8 ODIs for India between 1997 and 2003 and took 5 wickets. However, Bahule’s performance in first class cricket was amazing. He took 630 wickets in 188 matches and also scored 6176 runs. As an all-rounder, his contribution in domestic cricket is considered huge.

Bahutule has vast experience in coaching
Bahutule also has a lot of experience in the field of coaching. He has already worked as a bowling coach and spin consultant with the Indian team in about 10 foreign tours and series. During that time Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were associated with Team India.

Bahutule was also the head coach of the Indian white ball team that toured South Africa in November 2024. Apart from this, he also took charge of the India Emerging team that went on Oman tour. On the demand of Rahul Dravid, he was made the spin bowling consultant of the Indian team during the home Test series against Australia in 2022-23. He had worked with many young spinners.

Bahutule also took up the role of spin bowling coach at BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru from 2021 to 2024. Apart from this, he has also worked with Rajasthan Royals and has been the head coach of domestic teams like Bengal, Vidarbha, Kerala and Gujarat.

At present, the support staff of the Indian team includes batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, fast bowling coach Morne Morkel, fielding coach T Dilip and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. Now with the arrival of Bahutule, the spin department is expected to get further strength.
