Good news for central employees, what is the update regarding DA?

New Delhi. About 50 lakh central employees and more than 65 lakh pensioners of the country are waiting for the next increase in Dearness Allowance (DA). In April this year, the Central Government had increased the dearness allowance from 58 percent to 60 percent, the benefit of which was considered effective from January 1, 2026. Now the eyes of the employees are fixed on the possible DA increase of July 2026 and the progress related to the 8th Pay Commission.

However, till now no official announcement has been made by the Central Government regarding the new DA increase. In such a situation, estimates are being made only on the basis of various reports and available economic indicators.

Got 2 percent DA benefit in April

The central government had approved a 2 percent increase in dearness allowance in April 2026. After this the DA rate increased from 58 percent to 60 percent. The benefit of this decision went to central employees as well as pensioners, railway employees, defense personnel and employees working in other central departments.

Will DA increase in July?

The increase in dearness allowance is determined on the basis of Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW). The available data for March, April and May 2026 has shown a steady increase, raising the possibility that the next DA increase could be between 3 to 4 percent. However this is only a guess. The final decision will be taken only after the approval of the Central Government.

How is DA decided?

Under the system of 7th Pay Commission, dearness allowance is calculated on the basis of the average of last 12 months of AICPI-IW. If inflation increases then the possibility of increase in DA also increases. For this reason, employees keep a special eye on the inflation index data released every month.

Look at June’s figures

Now the employees are eyeing the AICPI-IW data of June 2026. If these also register an increase, then the possibility of the next DA increase may become stronger. However, the final decision will be taken only after the approval of the government.
