GST Council Meeting 2026: Date of 57th meeting changed, mobiles can become cheaper, know what other relief?

Business Desk: The date of the 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax i.e. GST Council has been changed. Earlier this meeting was proposed on 12 September 2026 in Delhi, but now it has been shifted to October.

According to the new date, the 57th meeting of the GST Council will be held in Delhi on 7 October 2026. The reason for change in the date of the meeting is being said to be the BRICS Summit to be held in Delhi. Earlier, the 56th meeting of GST Council was held on 3 September 2025.

GST Council date changed due to BRICS Summit

BRICS Summit is to be held in Delhi on 12 and 13 September 2026. India is hosting this conference. The GST Council meeting was also proposed in Delhi and the dates of both the programs were clashing with each other. For this reason, the 57th GST Council Meeting has been postponed from September to October 7.

Finance Minister will hold a meeting before the GST Council meeting

According to the new date, the GST Council meeting will be held on October 7. Before this, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman can hold a meeting with officials on 5 and 6 October.

In the last GST Council Meeting, the Center and States had made major changes in GST Rates and different categories. In such a situation, changes in tax rates and relief for the common people are also expected from this meeting.

GST expected to reduce on mobile phones

A major decision regarding GST on mobile phones is also possible in the GST Council meeting. Currently 18% GST is levied on mobile phones. It is coming to light that mobile sales are being affected due to rising prices.

In such a situation, if the government reduces the GST rate, then there can be relief in the prices of mobile phones and its sales are expected to get a boost in the festive season. However, no final decision has been taken yet to reduce GST on mobile.

GST Registration and Tax Credit process can be easy

There can also be a discussion on making GST compliance easier for businessmen in the 57th GST Council meeting. Changes are expected to be made to simplify the process related to GST Registration to Input Tax Credit i.e. ITC. The government's focus may be on making the tax process less complex for businesses and reducing the burden of compliance.

Expected relief in ITC on vehicles and insurance given to employees

In the meeting, relief regarding Input Tax Credit on vehicles provided by companies for the use of employees and Group Health Insurance or Life Insurance Policy purchased for employees can also be considered.

If there is a change in this direction, then the GST and tax related expenses of the companies may be affected. However, the final decision in these matters will be clear only after discussion in the GST Council meeting.

Eyes of common people and businessmen on GST Council

The 57th meeting of GST Council is now going to be held on 7th October. Many issues related to GST Rates, Compliance, Input Tax Credit and tax on different goods and services are expected to be discussed in the meeting.

Especially the eyes are on the possible reduction in GST on mobile phones and simplifying the GST process for businessmen. However, the final decision on these proposals will be taken only after the consent of the Center and the states in the meeting.
