Indian athlete Gulveer Singh secured the silver medal in the men’s 1500 meters at the Asian Games 2026 on Monday, achieving a personal best time of 3:36.72 in the final, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) reported.
Competing in the 12-man final, Gulveer remained in contention throughout the race and delivered a strong finishing kick in the last lap to claim silver.
Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa won the gold medal, setting a Games record with a time of 3:36.35. Another Japanese runner, Nagiya Mori, earned the bronze with a finish of 3:37.92.
Gulveer finished just 0.37 seconds behind Iizawa’s Games record time and over a second ahead of Mori to secure second place.
Fellow Indian Yoonus Shah finished ninth in the final, recording a time of 3:43.88.
Gulveer’s silver represents an improvement for India in the men’s 1500 meters event, with the country having won bronze in the previous Asian Games edition.
The time of 3:36.72 marked a career-best performance for Gulveer at a major championship, earning him a place on the podium.
This medal adds to India’s athletics tally at the Games, with Gulveer standing on the podium after a competitive finish against the Japanese athletes.
Notably, this is Gulveer Singh’s second silver medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, following his earlier silver in the men’s 10,000 meters on Friday, where he finished with a time of 28:29.38 behind Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew, gold medalist in 28:27.51.
With Gulveer’s latest silver, India’s overall medal count at the Asian Games has increased to 41, comprising four gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze medals, placing the country 12th in the medal standings.
