What exactly is the mosque controversy?

For the past many years, the Gyanvapi Temple-Masjid dispute has been going on. The Hindu party claims that the family of Somnath Vyas was conducting Hindu religious worship in the basement of the mosque until 1993. A portion of the ancient temple at this site was demolished during the reign of Aurangzeb in the 17th century.

While the Muslim party rejected this claim, the mosque was historically under the control of the Muslim community. This mosque dates back to the time of Aurangzeb and is said to have undergone various changes over time.

Mathura Shrikrishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah controversy

Therefore, a demand has been made on behalf of the Hindu devotees to shift the mosque from its current location.

In September 2020, the Civil Court dismissed the petition citing the ‘Place of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991’. However, this decision was reversed after an appeal was filed in the Mathura District Court.
