Agra: Director Vishal Chaturvedi has confirmed Hanuman Ansh 2, the sequel to the successful spiritual film Hanuman Ansh, which explores the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba. The announcement was made while Chaturvedi was interacting with audiences at a multiplex.
Sequel to focus on Firozabad
According to a Hindustan Times report, Chaturvedi said the sequel will focus on Neem Karoli Baba’s birthplace, Firozabad, and explore how and why he travelled to Agra, Mathura and other places during his spiritual journey.
The director has confirmed the project, but further details about the cast, production schedule and release date are yet to be announced. The storyline is also being kept under wraps.
The sequel is expected to explore chapters from the spiritual teacher’s life that were not covered in the first film. By focusing on places closely associated with him, the makers could offer audiences a broader look at his early years and spiritual journey.
Who was Neem Karoli Baba?
Neem Karoli Baba was a Hindu spiritual teacher and a devoted follower of Lord Hanuman. His birth name is generally given as Lakshman Narayan Sharma. He was born around 1900 in Akbarpur village in present-day Uttar Pradesh and died on September 11, 1973, in Vrindavan.
He became widely known through the accounts of devotees who described his teachings, personality and extraordinary experiences associated with him. These stories have since become an important part of the spiritual tradition surrounding the saint.
Many accounts of miracles attributed to Neem Karoli Baba are based primarily on devotees’ recollections. They are therefore regarded as part of the spiritual tradition surrounding him rather than independently verified historical facts.
Hanuman Ansh turns into a box-office success
The sequel announcement comes as Hanuman Ansh continues its strong theatrical run. Directed by Vishal Chaturvedi and starring Shobinaw Satyaa in the titular role, the film was released in cinemas on August 7.
The movie reportedly opened with a modest Rs 10 lakh but gained significant momentum through positive word of mouth. Made on a reported budget of around Rs 1.8 crore, the film has emerged as an unexpected theatrical success despite featuring a non-star cast.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Hanuman Ansh earned an estimated Rs 8.50 crore nett in India on Day 26, taking its total India nett collection to Rs 54.13 crore. Its reported India gross collection stood at Rs 63.82 crore.
The film’s performance has attracted considerable attention because of the sharp rise in collections after its initial release.
Madhur Bhandarkar praises the film
Director Madhur Bhandarkar recently praised the success of Hanuman Ansh, describing the film’s performance as a crucial case study for the Indian film industry.
The response is particularly notable because the film was made on a comparatively small budget and did not rely on established Bollywood stars. Its theatrical run has instead been driven largely by audience response and word of mouth.
In another notable comparison, the film’s reported Tuesday collection of Rs 8.50 crore surpassed the seventh-day collection of Yash-starrer Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups, which earned Rs 8.20 crore on its seventh day.
While the two films are vastly different in terms of scale, budget and genre, the comparison highlights the unusual momentum Hanuman Ansh has generated at the box office.
Kangana Ranaut calls Hanuman Ansh a satsang
Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut also praised the film and described it as a satsang, or spiritual gathering, rather than simply a movie.
She appreciated the film’s presentation of stories involving devotees who claimed to have had first-hand experiences with Neem Karoli Baba. Her comments further increased attention around the film and encouraged audiences to watch it.
The positive reactions from filmmakers and public figures have helped keep Hanuman Ansh in the spotlight during its extended theatrical run.
Hanuman Ansh 2 expected to expand the story
With Hanuman Ansh 2, Vishal Chaturvedi is expected to explore more aspects of Neem Karoli Baba’s life and spiritual journey.
The planned focus on Firozabad, Agra and Mathura could allow the sequel to examine the circumstances behind the saint’s movement between these locations. It may also bring previously unexplored stories associated with his life to the screen.
For now, the makers have not revealed the complete plot, cast details or release plans. More information is expected in the coming months.
The confirmation of Hanuman Ansh 2 comes at an important point for the franchise, with the first film continuing to perform strongly at the box office. Its unexpected success has created significant interest in what Chaturvedi will bring to the sequel.
